Auckland Council is seeking consultation on the draft Auckland Future Development Strategy 2023-2053. The Future Development Strategy is the Council’s plan to manage growth across Tāmaki Makaurau for the next 30 years. It seeks to integrate long-term land use and infrastructure planning while meeting future environmental, population, housing, and employment needs.
The strategy aims to promote a more compact approach to growth in existing urban areas whilst deferring timings of development in future urban areas, introducing infrastructure triggers and removing some areas due to hazard risks in future urban areas. It also seeks to limit rural residential growth in rural areas to protect the natural and productive environments. Existing business areas will also be a focus of repurposing and intensifying to cater for new employment opportunities.
The strategy once finalised will be implemented through changes to the Unitary plan, prioritisation of the infrastructure provision/upgrading, non-statutory approaches and any advocacy and research.
The timeline of the document is as follows:
- 6 June – 31 July 2023 – public consultation.
- August – September 2023 – feedback from public and local boards considered and changes made
- Late 2023 – Planning, Environment and Parks Committee to request adoption of final Future Development Strategy document.
We think it is important for all Aucklanders to have a say on what this document means to them as it will shape the future of Auckland over the coming years.
